In partnership with the non-profit First Book and the Education Ad program, CBS Radio and the Charlotte Hornets teamed up to give away over 4,000 books to five of Charlotte’s underserved elementary school students.

Last week, Hugo the Hornet kicked off his “Hugo Reading Revolution” in our area to get kids excited about reading and starting their own personal library of books at home.  And after Hugo and the Hornets taught kids ways to make reading a part of their daily lives, each student from the five Title 1 schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system hopped aboard the Hornets School Bus to pick out a book of their own.

The Kickoff Event took place at Briarwood Academy in Plaza Midwood, and the Hornets Book Bus made additional stops at Winterfield Elementary, Nations Ford Elementary, Albemarle Elementary, and Westerly Hills Academy.

First Book is an international non-profit organization dedicated to providing new books and educational resources to educational programs serving children in need.

By working with a network of over 135,000 community-based schools and programs, First Book can help provide books to the forty-two percent of children in the United States – nearly 30 million kids – that live in low income households.

CBS Radio would like to also thank our sponsors Keffer Hyundai, Orleans Homes, and Colorado State University Global Campus, as well as Newk’s Eatery for donating gift cards to the literary captains of each school.
